For many of our clients in Tamil Nadu and across India, Vastu Shastra is an important consideration in the design of their home or building. We regularly receive requests to incorporate Vastu principles into our architectural designs — and our answer is always yes, with some important caveats.
What is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian system of architecture and spatial arrangement that aims to harmonise the built environment with natural forces and energies. It specifies preferred orientations for rooms, entrances, staircases, water features and other elements based on the cardinal directions and the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and space).
Many clients believe that a Vastu-compliant home brings prosperity, health and happiness to its occupants. Whether or not one subscribes to this belief, Vastu principles often align well with good architectural practice — favouring natural light, cross-ventilation and logical spatial organisation.
Where Vastu and Structural Engineering Align
Many Vastu recommendations are entirely compatible with good structural and architectural design. Preferring the northeast for open spaces and light wells aligns with maximising natural light. Avoiding heavy structures in the northeast and preferring them in the southwest aligns with good structural planning for many site orientations.
Our architects are experienced in incorporating Vastu requirements into the design process from the outset, rather than trying to retrofit them later. When Vastu is considered from the beginning, it rarely creates significant design challenges.
Where Compromises Are Needed
Occasionally, a strict Vastu requirement conflicts with structural necessity, site constraints or building regulations. In these cases, we work with the client to find a solution that respects the spirit of the Vastu requirement while meeting all technical and regulatory requirements.
We never compromise structural safety or IS code compliance for Vastu. The safety of the building and its occupants is always our first priority. But within those constraints, we work hard to accommodate our clients' Vastu requirements.
Our Approach
When a client requests a Vastu-compliant design, we begin by understanding their specific requirements — which elements are most important to them and which they are willing to be flexible on. We then develop a design that satisfies as many of these requirements as possible while meeting all structural, architectural and regulatory standards.
The result is a home that our clients feel good about — not just structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing, but aligned with their values and beliefs.
Vastu Shastra and modern structural engineering are not opposites — they can coexist and complement each other when approached thoughtfully. At VIZHUMAM™ Design & Build, we have extensive experience designing Vastu-compliant homes and buildings that are also structurally sound, code-compliant and beautifully designed. If Vastu is important to you, we would be happy to discuss how we can incorporate it into your project.
